Mike, I love reading your articles. I’m a general internist at a community type hospital. I’m shocked at your description of ER MDs doing thorocotomies, crics, scope
My best friend is a nurse practitioner. She has similar stories. I've never understood the guy who squeezed quick dry cement into his rectum. It would not come out. He died after several operations. Btw, he was a sheriff.
Having been a patient who DID swallow a fish bone, and no it was not just a sensation of feeling like I swallowed something, I literally did. But the ER doc couldn't see anything on CT when he looked at it. I got a call the next morning from the emergency room saying "um, how ya doing? Radiologist read your ct this am and we would like you to come back..."
Still didn't get much done, they called the ENT who said he would see me in the office the next day (did I mention this happened of course over a holiday? ENT's don't do ANYTHING on a holiday unless you are a) not breathing or b) bleeding profusely ).
Suffice it to say I now thoroughly dissect fish while I am eating it!
I knew an ER doc. Came late to a function because a pt turned up with false teeth stuck up in her VJ. Party trick gone wrong. I asked how he got them out. He said.. made it smile!!! But that was the first time I realized people do very weird things!!!

Oh my goodness, some of these are just over the top! But I can imagine, working in the ER there's nothing that can really surprise you.
You can write a whole book just on this one topic!
